Last night my son was quite ill at around 1.30pm. For an hour we dealt with him and the bed sheets before finally getting him back to bed and then ourselves at around 2.45pm. An hour later I was up again checking on him and waking myself up once in the process.
Today I feel like ****
All my good intentions about an early start and getting part of my exercise programme in have gone out of the window. I feel lethargic although gradually coming to life
It was like being a new Dad all over again!
The point of this is that if ever you need to question the role of sleep in a wellness campaign its these sort of nights, thankfully rare enough these days (although a heavy social evening coming up tonight which will not help!), which bring home to you that sleep is absolutely integral to your body.
Of course there are plenty of studies which state the same thing but there's nothing like an empirical test to make this an unimpeachable.
And for those on a weight loss programme (and I have to constantly look over my shoulder at this issue myself) the lack of sleep raises cortisol which in turn promotes fat retention. The fact that it ruins the planned exercise programme the next day is the double whammy.

ps my son is at home but fortunately appears to be recovering well.
